We got Robbed in St George Utah! Winter Road Trip | RV Lifestyle

This week we visit the city of ST George to check out the local sights. Sadly we were robbed while walking the dogs in the park.

We visit the Mormon Temple and meet Elder Crane, who tells us all about the Temple. Then we take a ride over to Pioneer Park ro walk the dogs. We were only a way from our truck for about an hour, the parking lot was full of cars, but when we returned our window was broken and Diane’s purse was taken.

We learned that this can happen any where to anyone. We share our experience, and some tips on how to less the impact.

I’m always getting on my wife as to take her damn purse out of the truck when we leave ! Her response is that she doesn’t have anything in it ! Dumb answer because the criminal doesn’t know that and will break the window anyway !!! Women !!!🤬

Unfortunately, Utah has an abundance of meth users, and the police don’t even bother trying to arrest them anymore.

I was born and raised in St. George. The past 15 years there have been so many thefts! My brother builds homes and if he leaves his box trailer full of his building materials on site, someone will cut his locks and steal everything inside. This has happened to many construction trailers full of their supplies. My 86 year old mom lives by the temple. When I visit her I get scared just to leave my car parked outside her home because you can’t have anything nice there without having it locked up! Someone tried stealing my husbands hubcaps from his truck once. I took it to go somewhere and something wasn’t sounding right and come to find out someone tried stealing them but couldn’t since they needed a special key to get them off. I’m just thankful I wasn’t on the highway because I could’ve lost all control since all four were barely on. St. George is not a safe place anymore. Too many thieves have moved in. Just two weeks ago three houses away from my moms a neighbors ring camera caught some guy coming to their front door. He tried to go inside but it was locked. Instead, the camera showed him going through their car parked in their driveway. This was at 9:00 in the morning! They put their videos on facebook and everyone shared it and the guy was caught. He also broke into many other vehicles that same day.

I’m so sorry that idiots ruined your time in the city of my birth. St. George is a wonderful place ro explore. My parents married when there were only 3,000 people there. My uncle’s farm was 1/2 of Bloomington. I still have many relatives there. Hope you were able to continue on. That was such a personal violation. Hugs

Your title seems like click bait but maybe you don’t know. You were not robbed… It was theft. I’m a former 911 Dispatcher and a unit will usually not respond for petty theft less than $400. Sorry that happened to you… We had our truck stolen and it is a bummer. I was also a victim of armed robbery on another day and that was so much worse than theft. There is a hugh difference.

I think most factory alarms only work off a door opening ,breaking and going thru window won’t set off alarm at least on my GM truck it’s that way.

The camera is a great idea!!! It doesn’t happen a lot here. I’m so sad for you guys, but your attitude is awesome! At Home Depot you can get the Milwaukee sensor location detector for $20 I got one, slit a hole in my purse and put one in it. We have one on our expensive stroller too. That way you can go on the app and find the location.

My mom early retired from MA to St George n the 1990’s , it was a you do not need to lock your house, everyone knows everyone place then. We moved here in the 12 years ago and sadly so much has changed and every year crime is getting worse. One of the issues I see is there is so little for young people to do. St George focuses on being a retirement city (and tourism) but there are more school aged kids then seniors. They cut the summer camps, after school programs, and seem to turn down any company wanting to invest in businesses that would give youth something to do. There are over 35k kids in the city and no roller rink, ice rink, water park (it is 100 degrees every day from May-September), no art classes, arcades (like a chuckie cheese or dave and busters, no esports gaming center, teens and young adults ask all the time what can I do besides work and school? and the answer is watch netflix or go out to eat. The last few years as I lived near a park and school, I would see kids (good kids I knew for years, good students) hanging out at night at the school yard, it all starts with one daring another to do something small and it keeps getting to be bigger pranks and then petty crimes. While I believe parents should watch their kids, with 35k kids and so many parents working 2-3 jobs to pay basic bills since cost of living is so high, some teens are home alone. These kids have begged for a public pool, an arcade, a computer center, a water park, something to do and the city turns down companies willing to put in these facilities. A hollywood Connection (which is an indoor skating rink, movies, arcade )was wanting to come to the city and instead 3 more hotel for tourists were built. There has been a water park being built for over 10 years and it just stalls , Every place offering art classes, drop in art , or computer hang outs has been closed, these places were giving kids outlets instead of graffati. they were closed to open more tourist related industry.
I am so sorry your truck was broken into. I wish they would put up warnings since over the last year, has been happening so much. Local moms that have taken their kids to parks for years and never thought twice about locking a purse in a car are coming back to the lot to see windows smashed, the saddest cases are vans that are for handicapped kids smashed and only change taken out and then families have to get it fixed and repair times are not quick because the city is landlocked and parts have to be brought in and shipping is not fast, so families have no way to get their handicapped kids to school or doctors.
Sorry for the long post. So many people are moving here because they are being promised work and a safe place to live. There are jobs, no denying that, not the highest pay but you can get a job the day you arrive. It just is not as safe as it was. You have to think like you are in a big city. The St George city area is at 189k so that is not small town (like the 30k it was when my mom came ) . I personally could deal with the crime because I have lived in big cities before but the quality of life for kids is not that great IMO(unless you want your kids in a bubble, just go to school come home and not go out which some families do, I know 18 years old that have never left the area and never been alone at a grocery store). and the medical care is why were are packing up to move in a few months. Nothing to do with the virus but my mom waiting over 9 months to get a new primary care doctor when hers retired and she has serious medical issues, or the drive to the closest neurologist is over 600 miles , it is not ideal if you need medical care. The city has turned down over 10 new hospitals from opening , so there is a dire need for doctors, hospital chains willing to bring them here but the city wants a monopoly with one chain that can’t provide care to the population right now. After watching neighbors die without getting proper care, I will not let my mom suffer like that so back to cold weather and lots of doctors. It was a great place for many years and there are some very kind people still here we will miss. Just got to take care of your families health and safety first.

What a great video! We live in St. George. (Ivins area) I am SO disappointed in whoever did this to you guys! I am SO SORRY! I hope you guys got everything back. I sure wish we had camera surveillance up there. Maybe we need to work on that!

  16. Eileen Spagnoli on April 7, 2021 at 12:13 am

We live near Saint George and it’s good to know this happened. I am an insurance person so I have seen thousands of Auto break-ins. Absolutely nothing is safe in a locked vehicle. Cars are the easiest thing in the world to break into. When we go hiking We don’t bring purses or wallet. We bring an ID in our pocket and a little money. For Travelers it’s tricky because leaving valuables in an RV is no more secure than a car, so the only real solution for Travelers is carrying a backpack or fanny pack with your valuables on your person whenever you leave your RV or vehicle. I’m sorry that this happened to you.

  17. Project_JL on April 7, 2021 at 12:14 am

Sorry to hear that happened. I live in St. George. I can’t believe that happened. It definitely makes me think twice about what I leave in my car.

  18. RG G on April 7, 2021 at 12:14 am

I gal I know had her Subaru window broken into in SLC, near the hospital and Smith’s market area 3 yrs ago, they took her bag full of instruments that are used at her work place…never give thieves a chance, take your valuables, she left the pack where these low- lives saw it and took it…it’s happening everywhere now, locksmiths are very busy now and CCTV installers…much worst now with few jobs available…I was informed it’s the dope people are doing it most but it can be just plain crooks…they got me too in north orange county last November, same modality… nothing was lost though…I take my backpack and laptop in my home…sorry to hear of your loss…still St. G is a wonderful place I understand…been there once for a hike…

We learned another trick. Look around the parking lot for broken glass. We learned In Hawaii that thieves target cars as soon as the owners walk away. They are fast.

  22. Kathy Hurrle on April 7, 2021 at 12:19 am

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It just amazes me how people can do this to someone. It’s too bad they couldn’t have just taken the money and left the wallet. But I guess it’s one of those crash, grab and go things where they need to get away in a hurry. I always try to remember to bring my fanny pack or very small crossbody with my important items when I hike. I like having my phone with me any in case of an emergency.

  30. Greg Moore on April 7, 2021 at 12:25 am

Not that it matters but you were Burglarized not Robbed. Burglary is visible evidence of breaking and entering, Robbed is force by threatening bodily harm. You might want to correct your title.

Sorry you had to deal with that.

  34. William Hearn on April 7, 2021 at 12:27 am

The broken window is just adding insult to injury. The real cost is in replacing all the things lost. May God bless you and keep you safe!!

  35. Harry Lime on April 7, 2021 at 12:28 am

Was on company business in SLC a few years back and astounded at the size of the homeless camps all over but the biggest was near that Rio Grande Depot. Panhandlers quite aggressive and one guy dressed only under pants was quick with ant-white racist insults.

This is the new normal all over the US.

  36. The Conundrum Nut on April 7, 2021 at 12:29 am

It’s kind of sad that you led with the robbed title, and only 8 minutes was spent about St. George. There is so much here to see!

  37. frizzykk on April 7, 2021 at 12:29 am

Just a slight correction. The church’s official name is : The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “The” is part of the name.

  38. Traveling With Joe on April 7, 2021 at 12:30 am

Sorry you had to deal with this, I have a different story along those lines. Basically, secure valuables BEFORE you arrive somewhere, because criminals might see you hiding stuff when you park.
My sister in law had a habit of bringing a gigantic purse and a wallet full of gift cards, credit cards, etc but she would take a few things out, then ask to put the purse in the trunk when we arrived somewhere. Well, we parked at a public garage in Baltimore to go to an Orioles game, she put the purse in the trunk and when we got back after the game, the car was broke into and her purse and a few other things were missing.
So, secure your items, THEN drive where you’re going.

  39. Lynna Marsh on April 7, 2021 at 12:31 am

Our dogs walks consist of circling around my truck. Never let it out of my sight. But I don’t sight see, that’s just me.

  40. Gerald Fawcett on April 7, 2021 at 12:32 am

Lady you had a lot in your purse buy a backpack

  41. Urban Outdoorsman on April 7, 2021 at 12:33 am

St George is quickly filling up with Criminals from CA and the Vegas area. It’s easy pickens for them because folks think Utah is safe…it’s not. You said you don’t keep much in your purse but you had Truck Keys, Camper keys, credit cards, drivers license. That’s A LOT for a thief, that’s pretty much all they are looking for are those things. Give up your purse while traveling, and start using a backpack, and TAKE IT WITH YOU EVERY TIME YOU LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE.

  42. PJ on April 7, 2021 at 12:34 am

    Thieves know your address..,

  43. Trish Benedict on April 7, 2021 at 12:34 am

Happened to me once parking in a parking lot at a park at the Berkeley Marina. We went for a walk, I stashed my purse under the front seat, it wasn’t there when we got back. It only happens to you once, though. Sometimes I don’t wanna take my purse somewhere, but I always take the wallet out and make sure that anything that I care care about that was in my purse like Rx glasses are removed.

First, it was not your fault for leaving your purse in the truck. The low lives who stole and damaged your truck are to blame. I am sorry this happened here in St George. Generally this is a pretty safe place. Safe Travels and again, sorry about this shit.

  50. Darin Di Pietro on April 7, 2021 at 12:49 am

Dang I was in that exact parking lot 3 weeks ago! Luckily we kept everything in the trunk but it’s hard to believe anyone would have enough nerve to do that considering how packed the parking lot was.
Just goes to show no matter where you go there’s jerks who will be jerks.

Edit- it just dawned on me that a car alarm went off as we were coming off the rocks. Went on forever. Wonder if it was your truck😳….
