Solo Backcountry Camping, Tenkara Fly Fishing in the Deserts of Utah for Wild Trout!

This quick autumn overnight camping trip into the arid deserts of Utah was one of my favorite trips ever. I bring my tenkara rod and a selection of flies. The scenery was incredible and the trout were hungry!

Spoiler alert! I lost dozens of fish once hooked. Next time I go back I’m coming with a shorter rod and a net that’s faster to deploy. Even still, had an incredible time.

Thanks for watching!

Consider adding polarized sunglasses to your toolkit, it’ll take care of that glare on top of the water

Great video, and nice to see someone not taking themselves too serious when they mess up 😃.

Beautifully filmed in spectacular country. I’m glad to see you still have that great still photography eye, and that you are still pursuing the arts. Didn’t know you were into fly fishing. I am too, and fishing has pretty much dominated my photography for the last year or so. Looking forward to seeing more work on your channel.

Really nice work. What a spot! I want to be there right now. Today. Even though you had a bad day (hooking-up-wise) you still had a blast. I could feel it! I’d predict next time you go you will have little problem keeping them on the line, particularly with a shorter rod. My shorty is a Badger (now Tenkara Adventure Outfitters) UNC (for Un Named Creek…like these!). It might be too small at 8’6" than what you are looking for. But it’s a nifty little rod.

Your fussy fly selection was hilarious. Not making fun — I assume you were *trying* to have fun with it. Those fish would hit anything half-well presented without spooking them. And no need to fish 2 flies on that water! It was fun to be able to see the Chubby C on the video…I would have never thought to fish a fly like that there. I’d just throw on a #14 PA, or just about anything, and fish it all day long.

Thanks for sharing. Keep it coming!

I reallly enjoyed your video. I read the comments and you would love a TenkaraBum Traveler 27 on that stream. Double check the sharpness of your hooks. I don’t know if you tie your own, but hook sharpness and Tenkara success go hand in hand.

Beautiful creek and canyon! Great job! Your poor rod took a beating!

Love love love this. You might consider joining a discord channel Troutflies just started so it’s mostly Utah fly fisherman. You’d probably like it. REgardless, I’ll see you around! @t

    Your filming is wonderful.
I think in this location you would be better served with a shorter rod.
Hit me up if you ever make it to northern Idaho.

So beautiful, and so, so frustrating! I take a little hook file to give ’em a new edge when this happens (not that it works all the time!). Also, about the net: it may not be any quicker to deploy, but for backpacking and bushwacking to remote streams, I have loved the handy pak insta net. You might like it, they’ve been making them in the USA for many decades, lifetime guarantee, and folds down to very small size. I really liked the video, do some more!

Enjoyed your video. If you are interested in a shorter rod, I like: https://www.tenkaratanuki.com/online-store/Tanuki-275-Red-Camo-p75378913 and https://www.tenkaraya.com/product/288. I also have the tenkara rod co. white cloud 240 but I like the Shimotsuke Tenkara Gen 240 better because it casts better

  28. David Jeffrey on June 17, 2021 at 8:18 pm

Question. I’m new to Tenkara but an experienced fly Fisher. Is the ‘lost fish’ percentage typically higher than for fly fishing? In fly fishing, we can pull the line in with our non-casting arm and set the hook. In Tenkara, its merely the tension of the rod…..?

    Are you hiking Crox??

I love your videos. I’m a lot like you in that I use western flies on a Tenkara rod. I live in Salt Lake. Reach out if you want to go fishing some time. I can show some of my favorite spots. I caught 7 species of fish in a single creek in one day. Keep fishing and keep up the videos.

Beautiful scenery and video! I’m ready to go explore! Thanks for this!
